Presented by Dr. Jill Ahlberg Yohe
The third speaker in the Pipestone National Monument Guest Speaker Series is Dr. Jill Ahlberg Yohe. Come listen to Dr. Ahlberg Yohe provide a glimpse into how a curator creates a world class museum exhibit. This unique educational opportunity will take place on Friday, September 28, 2018 from 6 to 7 pm in the Pipestone National Monument Visitor Center auditorium at 36 Reservation Avenue, Pipestone, Minnesota. It is free and open to the public!
In the summer of 2019, the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA) will present Hearts of our People: Native Women Artists, the first large exhibition dedicated to celebrating the vast artistic achievements of American Indian women artists from ancient to contemporary times. Hearts of Our People includes the work of North American women artists in all media, including textiles, baskets, jewelry, painting, sculpture, photography, video, and digital art. In 2015, prominent Indigenous women artists, Native and non-Native curators, and scholars, gathered at MIA to form the National Exhibition Advisory Board and lend their voices to the development of the exhibition alongside lead curators Greeves and Ahlberg Yohe. With the knowledge and experience of the Advisory Board to enhance understanding of the art, “Hearts of Our People” will create a rich historical and cultural context for exploring questions in art history, anthropology, gender studies, and Native American culture.
Jill Ahlberg Yohe is the Associate Curator of Native American Art at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. In 2008, Ahlberg Yohe received her Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico, and her dissertation focused on the social life of weaving in contemporary Navajo life. Prior to coming to MIA, Ahlberg Yohe was the Assistant Curator of Native American art at the Saint Louis Art Museum, where she worked closely with Native collaborators in the installation and catalog of the Donald Danforth Jr. Collection of Plains Reservation Art. At MIA, Ahlberg Yohe has begun new initiatives to expand understanding and new curatorial practices of historic and contemporary Native art.
